A little about us:

We are a small, Kenyan-owned safari company, and Northern Laikipia is home to us. We are based on a private conservancy, which gives us a different way of experiencing the bush and a lot more freedom in how we guide.

The owner trained as a guide through FGASA and went on to become accredited into the KPSGA system. He started Untamed Steps because he wanted to create walking safaris in Kenya around the way he enjoys experiencing the bush — flexible, personal and focused on spending real time in nature.

Untamed Steps enjoys walking because one becomes much more immersed in their surroundings. There is something exciting about hearing an animal before you see it, finding tracks and following them, or coming across a sighting on foot and experiencing it from a completely different perspective.

For us, guiding is about more than finding animals. We want guests to leave with a better understanding of the environment around them — why the landscape looks the way it does, how animals interact with it and the smaller things that are easy to miss.

Whether we are walking or driving, we like taking the time to understand what is happening around us. We can follow tracks, identify plants, listen to what is happening around us or simply stay with something interesting rather than rushing on to the next sighting.

Being based on private land gives us the freedom to build our days around what is happening in front of us. We can get out and follow an animal on foot, stop for a swim in the river when it is hot, or head out after dark to look for species that are rarely seen during the day.

Our approach is to give guests a more in-depth understanding of the natural world while creating experiences that are difficult to get in the same way anywhere else.
